What is the Facebook Group Scraper?

The InsightSocial Facebook Group Scraper is a free Chrome extension that exports posts, reactions, comment counts, authors, and media URLs from any Facebook group — public or private — straight to CSV, Excel, or JSON. No API setup, no scripts, no account-ban risk.

It works by reading what your own logged-in Facebook session already loads, so you only pull data you have legitimate access to. Marketers use it to study competitor communities, researchers use it for social-listening datasets, and sales teams use it to surface leads in niche groups.

How to Use Facebook Group Scraper

Step 1: Install the Extension

Visit the Chrome Web Store and search for "InsightSocial" or click the "Add to Chrome" button above. Confirm the installation when prompted.

The InsightSocial icon will appear in your browser toolbar once installed.

Step 2: Navigate to a Facebook Group

Open Facebook and go to any group you want to scrape. This works with:

  • Public groups (anyone can access)
  • Private groups (if you're a member)
  • Groups you manage

Make sure you're on the group's main feed page, not a specific post.

Step 3: Open the InsightSocial Sidebar

Click the InsightSocial icon in your browser toolbar. The sidebar will appear on the right side of your screen, automatically detecting that you're on a Facebook group.

Step 4: Configure Your Scrape

Choose how many posts to extract:

  • 25 posts — quick sample
  • 50 posts — standard analysis
  • 100 posts — comprehensive sweep
  • 250 posts — deep dive into a single group

Select a sort order (Facebook's own group sorting modes):

  • New posts — strictly chronological, newest first
  • Recent activity — posts bubbled up by new comments and reactions
  • Most relevant — Facebook's algorithmic ranking

Step 5: Start Scraping

Click "Start Scraping" and watch as posts appear in the preview panel. You'll see:

  • Post content and author
  • Engagement metrics (reactions, comments, shares)
  • Progress indicator showing completion percentage

Step 6: Export Your Data

Once complete, click "Export" and choose your format:

  • CSV — Opens in Google Sheets, Excel, or any spreadsheet
  • Excel — Native .xlsx with formatting preserved
  • JSON — Structured data for developers

Your file downloads automatically, ready for analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it legal to scrape Facebook groups?

Scraping publicly available data for personal research, competitive analysis, or legitimate business purposes is generally permitted. However, you should:

  • Review Facebook's Terms of Service
  • Only scrape public groups or groups where you have legitimate membership
  • Use data responsibly and in compliance with privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA)
  • Never scrape for harassment, spam, or malicious purposes

When in doubt, consult with a legal professional about your specific use case.

How many posts can I scrape?

Each session pulls up to 250 posts from a single group (the preset options are 25, 50, 100, and 250). Scraping is unlimited on every plan — only the rows you export are metered, at one credit per row:

  • Free plan: 500 export credits per month
  • Pro monthly: 10,000 export credits per month for $9.99/mo
  • Pro yearly: 10,000 export credits per month for $95.88/year (works out to $7.99/mo)

You can run multiple sessions on the same group to walk further back in time — Facebook only loads so many posts in one continuous scroll, so deep historical pulls usually take a couple of sessions.

What export formats are supported?

InsightSocial supports three export formats:

  • CSV — Universal format, works with any spreadsheet application
  • Excel (.xlsx) — Native Excel format with proper formatting
  • JSON — Structured data format for developers and automation

Does it work with private groups?

Yes! If you're a member of a private group, InsightSocial can extract posts from it. The extension accesses data through your logged-in Facebook session, so you'll only see content you have permission to view.

You cannot scrape private groups you're not a member of.

Can I scrape group member lists?

Currently, InsightSocial focuses on extracting post content and engagement data. Member list extraction is on our product roadmap for future releases.

How fast is the scraping process?

Speed depends on several factors:

  • Your internet connection speed
  • Facebook's server response time
  • Number of posts requested

Typically, you can extract 100 posts in 1-2 minutes. Larger extractions may take longer.

Where is my scraped data stored?

Posts you scrape sync to your private InsightSocial account so you can re-open, search, and re-export them anytime from the portal. Only you can see what you've collected — we don't sell or share user data, and there's no public discovery on top of it.

The scrape itself runs inside your own logged-in Facebook session in your browser. We never see your Facebook password and never call Facebook's API on your behalf — only your account ever talks to Facebook.

What if a post has images or videos?

InsightSocial captures media URLs for posts containing images or videos. You'll get direct links to the media files that you can download separately if needed.

Can I schedule automatic scraping?

Yes. The extension has a built-in scheduler — set a group to be scraped every few hours, daily at a time you pick, weekly, or once at a future moment, directly from the sidebar. Scheduled scrapes are unmetered exactly like pressing Start yourself — you spend credits only when you export the results.

Scheduling is browser-side, not a cloud cron. A run opens its own Chrome window rather than taking over the tab you're working in, and that window has to stay in front while it collects — Facebook only loads posts into a window that's actually on screen. If Chrome was closed at the scheduled time, the run catches up once when you reopen it.
