Comparison

InsightSocial vs Apify

Social media exports priced by the row you keep — no compute units, no actor rental, no API key.

The short answer

Apify is a developer platform: 5,000+ actors, real APIs, schedulers, and webhooks. If you are shipping a data pipeline, it is the stronger tool and this page will not pretend otherwise. But if you just need Instagram hashtag posts, TikTok comments, or a LinkedIn follower list in a spreadsheet, you are paying for infrastructure you never touch — and the bill is impossible to predict before a run finishes. InsightSocial runs the scrape in the Chrome tab you already have open, on your own logged-in session, for a flat monthly price that does not move.

Apify's plan price is a credit allowance, not a cap on spend. Compute units (1 CU = 1 GB of RAM for 1 hour) are drawn against it, and proxies, extra concurrent runs and extra actor memory are billed separately. Many Store actors also charge their own monthly rental or per-result fee on top of the platform cost. Apify offers 10% off when billed annually. InsightSocial's export credits are the whole price — scraping is unmetered, and one credit covers one exported row.

The compute unit problem

Apify's most-cited friction point is not the sticker price — it is that you cannot know the price in advance. A compute unit is 1 GB of RAM running for one hour. How many units an Instagram scrape burns depends on the actor's memory setting, how long the target site takes to respond, and how many retries it needs when a proxy gets blocked. None of that is knowable before you press run.

  • Platform credits are consumed by compute units, storage, and data transfer
  • Residential proxy traffic is billed per GB on top of the plan
  • Extra concurrent runs and extra actor RAM are paid add-ons
  • Third-party Store actors can charge their own rental or per-result fee
  • A run that fails halfway still consumed the compute it used

Why a browser extension sidesteps blocking entirely

Cloud scrapers have to look like a real logged-in human from a datacenter, which is why the proxy line item exists at all. An extension does not have that problem, because it genuinely is a real logged-in human. InsightSocial reads the same data the page already loaded into your browser — the requests come from your IP, with your cookies, at the speed you scroll.

  • No proxy bill, because there are no proxies
  • No CAPTCHA-solving fees
  • Private groups, your own feed, and your connections are all reachable
  • Nothing breaks when a platform tightens datacenter IP blocking

What you actually get out

InsightSocial ships purpose-built extractors per platform rather than generic page-readers, so the exports carry the structured fields the platform's own API returns — engagement counts, timestamps, author metadata, comment threads, follower edges — instead of whatever happened to be painted on screen.

  • Instagram: hashtag posts, profiles, followers, following, comments, bio-link emails
  • TikTok: videos, profiles, comments, followers, analytics
  • LinkedIn: posts, profiles, companies, connections, post likers, comments
  • Facebook: groups, pages, profiles, posts, comments, reactions, followers
  • Plus X/Twitter, Threads, YouTube, Reddit and Pinterest
  • Export to CSV, Excel, JSON or straight to Google Sheets

When Apify is the better choice

Apify is a genuinely strong platform and there are jobs it does that InsightSocial simply cannot. Pick Apify when:

  • You need scraping to run on a schedule with your laptop closed
  • You are feeding a production data pipeline and need an API, webhooks and retries
  • You need millions of rows, or high concurrency across many targets at once
  • Your targets go beyond social media — e-commerce, SERPs, directories, maps
  • You want to write and host a custom scraper in TypeScript or Python
  • Your team already has engineers who will own the integration

Why teams switch from Apify

What you get when the scrape runs in your own browser

No API key, no JSON input

Install the extension, open the page you care about, click Scrape. There is no actor to configure and no token to manage.

Unlimited scraping

Collect and browse as much as you like for free. You only spend credits on the rows you export, and you can see the count first.

Your session, your IP

Nothing is handed to a cloud worker. The scrape happens in your browser using the account you are already logged into.

No proxy or CAPTCHA fees

Traffic looks exactly like normal browsing, because it is. There is no unblocking infrastructure to pay for.

Exports that open in Excel

CSV, Excel, JSON, or push straight into Google Sheets. No dataset API call required to get your data out.

Ask your data

Query any scrape in plain English — top posts by engagement, most active commenters, common hashtags — without writing a formula.

Frequently Asked Questions

For social platforms specifically, InsightSocial's free tier gives you unlimited scraping plus 500 exported rows per month, no credit card and no compute-unit metering. Apify's free tier gives $5 in platform credits, which is consumed by compute units, storage and proxy traffic — a heavy Instagram or TikTok run can exhaust it quickly. If your targets are outside social media, Apify's free tier is the more flexible starting point.
